Bill payment scam targets local Co-op members

Central Wisconsin Electric Cooperative (CWEC) is warning its members to beware of a payment scam that surfaced today.  The Co-op, headquartered in Rosholt, WI, received a report that a member has been contacted by individuals representing themselves as employees of the Co-op and claiming their electricity will be turned off within hours unless they make an immediate payment.  CWEC will not threaten members in this manner. Individuals impersonating the co-op and other utilities try to gain access to the member’s bank account or ask for payment through a third-party vendor.   Scammers typically stress the need for consumers to act quickly. “The co-op strongly urges members to protect their credit card and checking account numbers, account user names, passwords and Social Security numbers,” CWEC Vice President of Member Relations Mark Froseth said.  “If you receive such a call, do not give out any personal or financial information, and report the suspicious activity to the Cooperative by calling 1-800-377-2932,” Forseth continued.
